WAC-leading Nevada brings act to Las Cruces

In sole possession of first place in the WAC standings by starting the league slate with five straight victories, the Wolf Pack are a game ahead of NMSU at the moment after claiming an 85-75 win over Fresno State on Thursday night at home. With the victory the Pack, the three-time defending conference champions, have posted 10 consecutive triumphs since falling to in-state rival UNLV in early December.

As for the Aggies, they carried one of the longest win streaks in the nation into their game against Louisiana Tech three nights ago and were bounced by the Bulldogs in a 73-71 overtime affair in Ruston. The setback snapped a 13-game ride for NMSU, which is now 14-4 on the campaign. With respect to the all-time series between these two schools on the hardwood, the Aggies actually lead with a mark of 13-8, although Nevada has won three straight meetings. The most recent of those contests took place in the semifinals of the 2006 WAC Tournament in Reno with the Pack posting a 70-59 triumph.

Despite still feeling the affects of an injured ankle that kept him out of the first two games of his career with Nevada, Nick Fazekas returned with a vengeance against Fresno State two nights ago to put up 20 points and 10 rebounds in the 10-point victory. Marcelus Kemp, who had shouldered much of the load while Fazekas was on the mend, was good for 22 points and seven assists, while Denis Ikovlev and Ramon Sessions chipped in with 18 and 14 points, respectively. Fazekas, the two-time WAC Player of the Year, continues to pace the squad with his 20.3 ppg and 11.9 rpg, making him one of only a handful of players at the Division I level able to boast of averaging a double-double these days. He may not take as many shots as he used to, but when pushed Fazekas can still knock down triples with regularity at 47.2 percent. Kemp adds 19.3 ppg overall for the season, a number that leaps to 23.0 ppg in five WAC outings. Sessions (13.3 ppg) directs traffic on the floor, which has led to his team-best 77 assists, against only 33 turnovers.

New Mexico State figured to have an easy night against the Bulldogs on Wednesday and yet LaTech, which has just five wins in 17 tries, came alive with a two-point overtime win at home. NMSU lead by double digits at the break, thanks to 57.1 percent shooting from the field, but then the team went in the tank with a total of just five field goals in the second half. Tyrone Nelson posted a team-high 18 points off the bench, Justin Hawkins added 14 before fouling out and Hatila Passos recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards in the setback as well. The Aggies, who shot only 1-of-5 behind the three-point line the entire night, turned the ball over 23 times. Hawkins continues to lead the team in scoring this season with his 15.8 ppg, but he has seen a decline in his production in league games with just 11.4 ppg. Expectations were high for NMSU coming into this season, and yet the team has done all this damage without Nelson being the main focus. Nelson is currently averaging just 9.7 ppg and 6.8 rpg, and still the Aggies are coming up with 81.3 ppg to lead the WAC.
